It’s more common than not for Amish children, especially the oldest girl and boy, to be forced to be the second mother and second father. This is parentification, a form of child abuse.
A central message of the film is that wanting rights for practicing Amish women and girls is an attack on the faith, but taking away their rights is just religious freedom.
“Secular” has nothing to do with religion. You can be religious and secular at the same time.

The word “faith” is often used in the marketing of religion, which has the singular aim of selling hope at a profit to cover for other things. Faith makes an acceptable smokescreen for the dogma of religion.
