Who We Are

The Amish Heritage Foundation (AHF) is, to our knowledge, the first––and so far only––organization in 300+ years of Amish history that advocates for the Amish (whether inside or outside the Church) without a religious price tag.

AHF is nonsectarian and serves all Amish everywhere, with a focus on the US (where most Amish live). Simultaneously, we act as a diplomatic and cultural attache between the Amish and mainstream society.

Our key initiatives are education, female-driven entrepreneurship, and health and well-being.

Our flagship project is to overturn Wisconsin v. Yoder, the 1972 Supreme Court case that denies Amish children––and consequently all children in the US and Native lands––an education beyond the eighth grade. This ruling violates a child’s Constitutional right to a quality education.

AHF plays various civic roles such as educator, catalyst, and producer on Amish issues. We are military veteran and LGBTQ+ welcoming, we fight for sexual assault survivors, and we make available the expertise of strategic partners to support needs in areas such as cross-cultural awareness, social services, entrepreneurship, mentoring, legal affairs, and physical and mental health.

Press Advisory – Amish Heritage Foundation and SNAP – Nettie Yoder Hearing in Sullivan IL

Mission (one sentence)

The mission of The Amish Heritage Foundation is to help people of Amish origin become active members of the global community and to educate the general public about the facts of Amish culture.

Mission (expanded)

The mission of The Amish Heritage Foundation is to help people of Amish origin transition into compassionate, active members and leaders of the global community, guided by enlightenment principles.

The first step in this process is to reclaim our Amish narrative and engage our silenced issues.

Our mandate is to establish a new generation of Amish leaders who speak on issues of discrimination, marginalization, educational deprivation, collusion of church and state to keep us imprisoned, exploitation by academia and the media, and predatory manipulation by fundamentalist Christianity.

Nonprofit Status

The Amish Heritage Foundation (AHF) was founded by Torah Bontrager in 2018. AHF is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and charitable contributions are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law. Our federal tax identification number is 82-4591861.

What People Are Saying

“This thread is literally the most ex Amish or Amish descendants I have ever seen in one place who probably don’t hate me for being gay.”

[Referencing a public discussion about AHF on social media]

“I didn’t realize until I was older how much a lack of education hurt me. There are no decent-paying jobs for us Amish men when we leave, except truck driving and construction.”

“AHF is a safe place for folks who experienced intergenerational violence/familial violence….”
